Age 22 Doubling up Karate training with physical labour in preparation for the Black Belt grading

Throughout most of those first 3 difficult years in London, I kept in my back pocket an excerpt from James Allen, one of my favourite authors at that time. The excerpt below is from ‘As a Man Thinketh’ and a young person starting out in the workplace might wish to use it as a source of inspiration if they are in difficult circumstances.

“Here is a youth hard pressed by poverty and labour; confined long hours in an unhealthy workshop; unschooled and lacking in the arts of refinement. But he dreams of better things; he thinks of intelligence, of refinement, of grace and beauty. Unrest urges him to action, and he utilizes all his spare time and means, small though they are, to the development of his latent powers and resources. Very soon so altered has his mind become that the workshop can no longer hold him. It has become so out of harmony with his mentality that it falls out of his life as a garment is cast aside, and with the growth of his expanding powers, he passes out of it forever.” - James Allen

After receiving the black belt I entered a few more karate competitions. I definitely had improved from the competitions as a coloured belt, but black belt competition was a completely different league, I particularly enjoyed coming 2nd in these matches and being way out of my league. A new black belt in actuality is still only a beginner and a seasoned competitor would prevail. I found the degree to which I came out of my comfort zone was equal to personal growth.

I was closing in on my intention to start a business and a few more tribulations seemed to be pulling me in this direction. My employment at the insurance company had been terminated for telling the offensive sales manager about his faults which he didn’t seem to appreciate and I was fired by a 2nd security firm after finishing the Paragon club for sleeping on one of the 60 hour shifts.

“When one door closes another one opens.”

I read with considerable interest the message in ‘Your Infinite Power to be Rich’ by Joseph Murphy. It was written in 1966 and seemed to fit with the success I had been having with visualization. This was the story by Joseph Murphy:

FROM $5,000 to $50,000 a year

“A few years ago a salesman who attended my Sunday lectures and who listens to my daily radio program asked me.

“How can I make $50,000 a year? I am married and have three children. I barely make ends meet. My wife has to work in order for us to break even. In many instances, the explanation is the cure. I explained to him that the thought-image or mental pattern of wealth in his mind is the first cause relative to that thing; it is the actual substance of wealth, untouched by any previous conditions of lack, limitation, or restrictions of any kind.
